What Base64 is for
Base64 writes any data, a picture or a document, using only 64 safe characters, so it can travel where only text is allowed: e-mail attachments, data URLs in web pages, JSON, and tokens.
It makes data about a third bigger, and it is not encryption: anyone can decode it. Text is encoded as UTF-8, so accents and emoji come back exactly.
URL-safe Base64 uses - and _ instead of + and /, and usually drops the = padding, so it can go in a web address. This page reads both forms.
